Laser Hair Removal Treatments
Laser hair removal differs from other types of temporary and permanent hair removal techniques. The only other permanent hair removal technique, electrolysis, is very slow because it treats only one hair at a time. It can be painful and can be very time consuming because it requires many, many sessions for each hair to be individually treated. Temporary hair removal techniques like waxing and threading are faster, but because there is no permanent solution, they require ongoing treatments and expense. Laser hair removal treatments, in contrast, can be performed relatively quickly and will result in permanent hair removal.
In contrast to other types of hair removal, laser hair removal works very quickly (6-8 sessions) and provides permanent hair removal. Laser hair removal provides permanent results by heating and closing the small blood vessel that feds the hair. The laser heats the bulb (base) of the hair follicle, which in turns heats up the blood vessel, closing it off so that it can no longer nourish the hair. Once the blood vessel is closed, the hair ceases to grow.
The type of laser used for permanent laser hair removal depends on the hair and skin type of the patient. For light skinned patient our laser of choice is the Lumenis Lightsheer. This laser is the gold standard for fair skinned individuals and can be effectively used for skin types such as Asians, East Indians and Hispanics. African Americans and darker skinned Asians, East Indians or even South Americans require a long pulsed Nd:Yg laser and the two we use at celibre are the Sciton profile and the Laserscope Lyra. Using this laser ensures that the risk of side effects from laser hair removal for dark skinned patients is very low.
 Permanent laser hair removal normally requires 4 - 8 treatments for optimal results. There are two reasons for this fact. The first is that closing the small blood vessel that feeds the hair follicle can require multiple sessions. It does not always close completely after 1 or 2 treatments. The second reason that multiple laser hair removal treatments are required for permanent results is that the hair that we target during the treatment is not always there. Hair has three different growth cycles and in one of the hair growth cycles the hair falls out. When the hair is not present our target is gone and laser hair removal will not be effective at this time. The good news is that at any time, the majority of our hair is in the active growth phase while only a minority is absent or in the resting phase.
The hair growth cycle also affects the time between your laser hair removal treatments. Each area of the body has a different time period associated with the hair growth cycle. For this reason, you may have different durations between treatments depending on which are of the body is being treated. The average duration between treatments for all areas of the body is approximately 8 weeks.
Laser hair removal treatment does involve some discomfort and normally our patients describe it as similar to a rubber band being snapped on the skin. During the laser hair removal treatments a cooling window is placed on the surface of the skin to minimize discomfort and also to protect the upper layers of the skin from the laser. The laser fires through the cooling window bypassing the upper layers of skin and is absorbed by the bulb of the hair follicle.
Expected Outcomes
It would be unrealistic to expect that 100% of the hair is removed during laser hair removal. 95% of our patients achieve between 70% and 95% reduction with an average of 4-8 treatments. For reasons unknown, approximately 5% of our patients do not respond to laser hair removal treatments. |
